At the Guatemala border going into Belize one is greeted
by a map that does not show Belize, but indicates that
it is part of Guatemala. The fact that Guatemala does not
recognize Belize and insists that the land belongs to them
is the reason that the British maintained forces in Belize
to protect them — and British interests. Belize was
British Honduras until receiving independence in 1981.
