After the cleric
told me that Islam believes that Jesus was a good man and a prophet,
I said to him that I truly felt sorry for him. I told him that he
appeared to be an intelligent man, well educated, so how could he
believe that Jesus, if not God, was not a liar and a blasphemer
as the Jewish religious leaders of Christ's day accused.
He immediately
contradicted himself by boldly proclaiming to me and the growing
assembly that Jesus had told a rich man to "not call Me good."
I pointed out to him that this was a complete misquote of the Scriptures,
Jesus had not told the rich man not to call Him good, but rather
asked him why he called Him goodbecause only God is
good. The question really was did the rich ruler recognize who Jesus
truly was. The cleric did not believe me ... until somebody in the
crowd produced a Bible and showed him the verses. The cleric was
truly taken aback, he had really believed that he knew that verse.
As I pointed
out the places that testified to Jesus being the only begotten Son
of God and Himself God he became more and more flustered. At one
point a Muslim in the crowd started to shout at me, and this cleric
told him in no uncertain terms to hold his tongue and be quiet.
Where before,
all we had seen was a lot of laughing and heckling with other speakers,
here the large crowd of people seemed to hang on every word that
passed between me and the Muslim. It was an incredible feeling,
and the sense of the presence of the Holy Spirit was just amazingly
powerful to me. It was as though I could feel the Word of God penetrating
hearts as I watched.
Finally, after
about a half an hour, the cleric in a state of obvious frustration,
said that he was going to tell me what Jesus said. I stopped him
and said, no ... I will tell you and everybody listening what Jesus
said. He proclaimed for all the world to hear throughout all time,
and for you to hear today:
"I
am the way, and the truth, and the life;
no one comes to the Father but through Me."
It was a good
place to end, so I shut up and stepped down. Then it was off to Northampton.
